Bennington alumni have won 12 Pulitzer Prizes; 3 have been U.S. poet laureates; 4 have won MacArthur Geniuses; countless have become New York Times bestsellers; and two have become one of Time magazine\u2019s 100 most influential people. Winning entries from the Young Writers Award will be published online on the Bennington College Website, and participants can win up to $1,000 in cash prizes and up to $40,000 in scholarships to attend Bennington College.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c152e61 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4c152e61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2.\tHow does the contest work?<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28493765 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"28493765\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aralia.com\/writing\/bennington-college-young-writers-awards\/\">Bennington College Young Writers Awards<\/a> has three categories for high school students to select from. Students can <strong>only choose one category<\/strong> to submit work, and a student can only enter once per year.<\/p><p><u>Poetry<\/u><\/p><p>Submissions for the poetry category must contain <strong>three poems<\/strong>. Any poetry style is accepted<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">, and there is no word or line limit for the poems. See very different examples of how creative you can get with poetry from last year\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennington.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/sources\/docs\/bernick-sophie-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first-<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennington.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/sources\/docs\/chen-ava-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">third-place winners<\/a><\/span>.<\/p><p><u>Fiction<\/u><\/p><p>Submissions for the fiction category include <strong>short stories or one-act plays<\/strong>. The word limit is 1,500 words. If submitting a one-act play, scripts must run for under 30 minutes. The word limit is 1,500 words. See an example from last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennington.edu\/doc\/84534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finalist<\/a>.<\/p><p><u>Contest Rules<\/u><\/p><p>Both the fiction and nonfiction categories have a strict 1,500-word limit. Headers, footers, footnotes, titles, and bibliographies count in the word limit. <strong>There are no exceptions to the word limit<\/strong>; the judges require you to cut all excess words.<\/p><p>Submissions must be <strong>typed, double-spaced, and in a legible typeface<\/strong> and font size such as Times New Roman 12-point. Each page must include the author\u2019s name.<\/p><p>The Bennington College Young Writers Award has <strong>free entry<\/strong> for all students.<\/p><p>Each participant must have a <strong>high school teacher serve as a \u201csponsor\u201d<\/strong> to be the point of contact for the competition. You should choose a teacher who has read and edited your work before, and knows you well. If you\u2019ve submitted your work to other writing competitions and want to try for the Young Writer\u2019s Award with the same piece, that\u2019s acceptable, too.
