Omnibus Magazine Sam Hood Translation Prize

Published biannually in March and September, Omnibus Magazine is dedicated to promoting Classics to students and teachers all around the world. The magazine hosts two competitions, one of which is the Omnibus Magazine Sam Hood Translation Prize. In this competition, students are invited to provide elegant, stylistic, and creative translations of Greek and Latin prose and verse.

Competition Details

1. Introduction

In this competition, students are invited to provide elegant, stylistic, and creative translations of Greek and Latin prose and verse. Below texts can be found here: 

  • Plutarch, Life of Antony 26.1-3
  • Euripides, Electra 300-322
  • Longus, Daphnis and Chloe 1.9.2-10.3
  • Cicero, Pro Murena 22
  • Ovid, Metamorphoses 3.708-31
  • Propertius, Elegies 1.1-24

2. Entry Requirement

Upon submitting an entry, students are required to submit a statement from a teacher containing the teacher’s e-mail address confirming that the student is in full-time pre-university education. 

3. Submission

Entries should be submitted electronically, as e-mail attachments, preferably in Microsoft Word format, to Dr Emma Greensmith: emma.greensmith@classics.ox.ac.uk

4. Prize

The prize winner will receive a cheque for £75 and a classical poetry book.
