Class Introduction

Covering all humanities disciplines—including History, English, Philosophy, and Political Science—it guides students from source gathering to logical argumentation, building to a comprehensive mastery of academic writing skills.

The course emphasizes the cultivation of critical thinking, research skills, and scholarly expression, laying a solid foundation for writing research papers for school, academic competitions, and scholarly publications.

Outcome
  • Independently choose a research topic and create a clear, actionable research framework (paper outline & research questions
  • Conduct effective research using high-quality, peer-reviewed academic resources such as JSTOR and Project Muse
  • Develop original, nuanced, and defensible thesis statements
  • Construct logically coherent essays using the Claim–Evidence–Analysis structure
  • Properly collect and cite research in various approved academic formats (MLA, APA, etc.)
  • Pursue flexible next steps:
    • Publication-focused: With subsequent one-on-one intensive sessions, expand the research framework into a full paper suitable for submission to The Concord Review
    • Competition or school paper-focused: Apply the complete research and writing process to prepare for the John Locke Essay Competition, Harvard International Review (HIR), or school-based term papers
Feedback

Students and their parents will receive brief feedback after each class regarding the student’s general participation in class. Students will also receive feedback on graded assignments via email.
