Students will also focus on how historical, social, and cultural context affect a text’s narrative, emphasizing how literary devices help to control theme(s). Since reading and writing are inextricably linked, students will learn to actively read the text at both the literal and inferential levels.

Through a survey of three books, students will increase their exposure to new vocabulary in context, practice discussion skills with both their teacher and peers, and be introduced to ways of approaching theme, character, setting, and plot through conversation.
