For students planning to take the AP exams in 2027, analyzing the 2026 score distributions alongside previous years’ results can help them make smarter decisions about course selections and exam preparation. Some subjects consistently produce high percentages of top scores, while others have experienced notable shifts over the past several years due to curriculum updates, exam revisions, or changes in the testing population.
The Importance of AP Scores
For many students applying to colleges in the United States, AP courses and exams have become an important component of a competitive academic profile.
Strong AP performance demonstrates that a student can succeed in college-level coursework and shows academic ambition and a willingness to take on rigorous challenges. High scores may strengthen students’ college applications, qualify them for college credit or advanced placement, and, at some schools, contribute to a weighted GPA.
Because AP courses require a significant investment of time and effort, choosing the right subjects is just as important as preparing for the exams. Understanding historical score trends can help students build a balanced AP schedule that aligns with their strengths, academic interests, and long-term college goals.
Understanding AP Score Distributions

AP English
AP English Language has experienced a dramatic recovery over the past three years, while AP English Literature has remained one of the most stable AP humanities exams.

AP English courses continued to produce strong results in 2026, with 42–43% of students earning a score of 4 or 5. Although the two exams reported nearly identical success rates, their recent trends tell different stories.
AP English Language and Composition has rebounded significantly since 2023, rising from 30–31% of students earning a 4 or 5 to 43% in 2026. By contrast, AP English Literature and Composition has remained remarkably consistent, with approximately 41–44% of students achieving top scores over the past five years.

AP Math & Computer Science
AP Mathematics and Computer Science continued to show one of the widest performance gaps among all AP subject areas in 2026. While advanced mathematics courses produced some of the highest success rates across the entire AP program, introductory computer science courses remained considerably more challenging.

AP Calculus BC once again led the group, with 68% of students earning a 4 or 5, reinforcing its position as one of the highest-scoring AP exams. AP Precalculus also continued its strong debut, rising to 58% in just its third year, suggesting that schools and students are becoming increasingly familiar with the new curriculum.
Meanwhile, AP Computer Science A surpassed the 50% mark for the first time, continuing its upward trajectory and reflecting stronger programming preparation in high schools. In contrast, AP Computer Science Principles remained relatively stable at around one-third of students earning a 4 or 5, indicating that while the course is introductory, mastering its broad conceptual content remains a challenge.
AP Sciences
AP Science exams remained relatively stable in 2026, with most courses reporting similar results to the previous year. However, the five-year trends highlight two distinct patterns: improving performance in the algebra-based physics courses and continued consistency across the life sciences.

AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 have maintained the substantial gains first seen in 2024, with nearly half of students now earning a 4 or 5. Meanwhile, AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Science have delivered consistently strong results over the past several years, while AP Biology has remained steady at around 40-43%.
In contrast, the calculus-based AP Physics C exams continue to report relatively high percentages of top scores but remain below their 2022–2024 levels, suggesting that recent performance has stabilized after several exceptionally strong years.
AP History & Social Sciences
AP History and Social Science courses continued their strong performance in 2026, with most exams reporting 45–51% of students earning a 4 or 5. Compared with just a few years ago, this subject group has experienced some of the most significant and sustained improvements across the entire AP program.

The largest gains have come from the history and civics courses. AP United States Government & Politics, AP United States History, and AP World History have all doubled their percentages of students earning top scores since 2022–2023. AP Human Geography and AP Psychology have also continued their steady upward trajectories, while AP European History has maintained the improvements first seen in 2024.
AP Comparative Government & Politics, AP Macroeconomics, and AP Microeconomics have remained relatively stable over the past five years, with only modest fluctuations in student performance.

AP Capstone
The two AP Capstone courses continued to follow distinct performance trends in 2026. AP Research reached its highest success rate in the past five years, with 48% of students earning a 4 or 5, continuing a steady upward trend from 38% in 2022. In contrast, AP Seminar remained one of the most consistent AP exams, with approximately 28–31% of students earning top scores each year.
The difference between the two courses reflects their distinct assessment models. While AP Seminar emphasizes collaborative projects, source evaluation, and argumentation, AP Research allows students to build on those skills by conducting an independent, year-long research project.

AP World Language
AP World Language exams saw the most significant shifts of any AP subject group in 2026. While several language exams have historically reported some of the highest percentages of students earning 4s and 5s, many experienced notable declines this year compared with recent trends.

AP Chinese Language and Culture remained the highest-scoring exam in the group, with 67% of students earning a 4 or 5 despite a decline from 73% over the previous three years. Similar decreases were seen across AP Japanese, AP Spanish Language, AP Italian, AP German, and AP French, suggesting that 2026 was a more challenging year for many world language exams.
One notable exception was AP Latin, which reached 49% of students earning a 4 or 5, which is the highest performance the course has recorded in the past five years. This improvement stands in contrast to the broader downward trend observed across modern language exams.

How to Choosing the Right AP Courses
A higher percentage of students earning a 4 or 5 does not necessarily mean an exam is easier. In many cases, strong performance reflects the background and preparation of the students who typically take the course. For example, AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C consistently report high success rates partly because they attract students with advanced mathematics preparation.
Students should prioritize courses that align with their academic interests, strengths, and future goals. Those interested in STEM fields may benefit from combining advanced mathematics, computer science, and science courses, while students interested in humanities, law, social sciences, or communication-related fields should focus on developing strong reading, writing, and analytical skills through AP English, history, and social science courses.
Beyond subject knowledge, many AP exams assess transferable skills that are valuable in college and beyond. Courses such as AP English Language, AP Seminar, AP Research, and AP History emphasize critical thinking, argumentation, research, and evidence-based writing—skills that apply across nearly every academic discipline. Similarly, AP Computer Science, AP Statistics, and advanced mathematics courses help students develop problem-solving and quantitative reasoning skills that are increasingly important in a wide range of careers.
