Class Introduction

This course provides international students with an introduction to the US school curriculum, focusing on the subjects of History and Geology. Over the 10-class program, students will engage in interactive lessons, discussions, and hands-on activities to develop a deeper understanding of these academic disciplines.

The History portion of the course (5 classes) will explore key events, figures, and themes in American history, helping students gain insight into the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped the nation. The Geology segment (5 classes) will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of Earth science, including plate tectonics, rock formation, and natural resources.

Through this comprehensive program, students will not only expand their knowledge but also strengthen their critical thinking, research, and communication skills – essential tools for success in the US educational system and beyond.

Teacher Background

Formerly an English teacher and department head at Indian Mountain School with over 15 years of English teaching experience at American middle and high schools, as well as extensive experience in teaching English abroad.

Class Session

History (5 classes)

  • Class 1: Introduction to American History
  • Class 2: The American Revolution and the Founding of the Nation
  • Class 3: Westward Expansion and the Civil War
  • Class 4: The 20th Century: World Wars, Civil Rights, and the Cold War
  • Class 5: Contemporary America: Challenges and Opportunities

Geology (5 classes)

  • Class 6: Introduction to Geology: Earth’s Structure and Composition
  • Class 7: Plate Tectonics and Volcanic Activity
  • Class 8: Rocks, Minerals, and the Rock Cycle
  • Class 9: Weathering, Erosion, and Sedimentary Processes
  • Class 10: Natural Resources and Environmental Challenges

Each class will be 2 hours long, with a mix of lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities to engage the students and reinforce their learning.

Feedback

Students and their parents will receive brief feedback after each class, regarding the student’s general participation in class. Students will also receive feedback on graded assignments via email.
