About the National Latin Exam

The National Latin Examination (NLE) is an annual exam offered to students who are interested in Latin in the United States and worldwide. The NLE is not a competition but rather an opportunity for students to reinforce their knowledge of Latin and receive recognition in the classroom. Based on their scores, students can earn certificates, and medals, and even be eligible for scholarships.

The exam consists of three parts, testing students’ knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary, the Roman world, and a Latin text. The Intermediate and Advanced Reading Comprehension Tests are also offered, which assess students’ understanding of Roman culture, history, and mythology. There are no standalone grammatical or cultural issues on the exam.

Deadline: The exam is typically scheduled for the second week of March, and registration begins in September and continues until the end of January of the following year.
Eligibility: Students must have taken an introductory Latin course or be in the first year of a two-year Latin first course.
