Class Introduction
AI is rapidly changing how students learn, research, write, and complete academic assignments. At the same time, schools are introducing increasingly detailed policies about when and how AI can be used. For students, the challenge is no longer simply knowing how to use AI. They also need to understand when AI use is appropriate, when permission may be required, and when relying on AI could cross the line into academic dishonesty.
AI SMART – Mastering AI for Academic Success is a three-session seminar designed to help students build that judgment.
Through discussions, real academic scenarios, case studies, and hands-on exercises, students will learn how to use AI as a responsible academic tool for brainstorming, explanation, research support, practice, and feedback while maintaining ownership of their work.
The course also teaches students to approach AI-generated content critically. Rather than assuming that a polished AI response is accurate, students will practice identifying factual errors, fabricated citations, unsupported claims, and superficial analysis, and learn how to verify information using reliable sources.
Outcome
- Understand fundamental principles of academic integrity, including plagiarism, unauthorized assistance, fabrication, and misrepresentation of authorship
- Distinguish between appropriate, questionable, and inappropriate uses of AI for academic work
- Identify the strengths and limitations of AI as a tool for learning, research, and writing
- Recognize common problems in AI-generated material, including factual errors, fabricated citations, unsupported claims, and superficial analysis
- Evaluate AI-generated writing critically rather than assuming that polished writing is accurate or intellectually sound
- Understand how teachers and schools may identify inappropriate AI use, including the possibilities and limitations of AI-detection tools
- Use AI appropriately for activities such as brainstorming, explanation, practice, and permitted feedback
- Verify AI-generated information using reliable sources
- Develop sound personal practices for maintaining academic integrity while using AI
- Apply responsible AI practices to authentic academic assignments
Feedback
Students and their parents will receive brief feedback after each class regarding the student’s general participation in class. Students will also receive feedback on graded assignments via email.
Class Schedule
3 group classes, 1.5 hour each class, 4.5 hours of instruction in total.
After the course, the instructor will also conduct a final review and refinement of the student’s major assignment and provide the polished final version with feedback (0.5 hour).
