ACSL (American Computer Science League) organizes computer programming and computer science contests for K-12 students. Founded in 1978, ACSL is now in its 48th year of continuous operation and runs team-based contests that combine CS theory questions with programming problems. Schools, organizations, and local groups register teams through an advisor, and ACSL runs contests online via HackerRank.

USACO (USA Computing Olympiad) identifies and trains high school computing students at all levels. Founded in 1992 by Dr. Don Piele to send a U.S. team to the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), USACO is now directed by Dr. Brian Dean at Clemson University. USACO is individual, free, purely algorithmic, and the direct pathway to the IOI and EGOI for U.S. students.

ACSL tests broad computer science knowledge across a range of topics, while USACO focuses on solving increasingly difficult algorithmic problems independently. At the higher levels, ACSL Senior is roughly comparable to a strong AP Computer Science course combined with discrete mathematics, while USACO Gold draws on concepts typically taught in a college algorithms course, with Platinum extending beyond that level.

How to Prep for ACSL: A Division-by-Division Study Guide

USACO: 4 Divisions

Every student begins in Bronze, regardless of prior programming experience, and can advance by meeting the promotion cutoff for their division. Students who earn a perfect score can also be promoted immediately during the same contest.

The promotion thresholds from the 2026 First Contest: Bronze to Silver required 700 points or more, Silver to Gold required 700 points or more, and Gold to Platinum (certified) required 800 points or more.

4. Contest Format

ACSL gives you a 30-minute theory quiz plus a 72-hour window to solve one programming problem, where you can research, test, and iterate. USACO gives you four continuous hours (five for the US Open) to solve three problems with no outside help. Your timer starts when you log in, and you’re finished when it hits zero.

For the ACSL Finals, students must face 2 programming problems within a 3-hour limit, plus a 20-question short-answer test in 1 hour. To reach Finals, you need 28 points or more (out of 40 possible) across the regular season for Senior, Intermediate, or Junior divisions.

For the 2025-2026 season, USACO introduced three format changes. All Platinum competitors were reset to Gold, the US Open became proctored and invitation-only, and a new “certified scores” system requires Gold and Platinum students to start within a specific 15-minute window on Saturday for their scores to count toward promotion and finalist selection.

USACO Topics by Division

Bronze covers simulation, complete search, basic sorting, introductory greedy algorithms, and introductory graph problems. 

At Silver, you’ll see prefix sums, binary search on monotonic functions, two pointers, DFS/BFS graph traversal, flood fill, and greedy algorithms with sorting. You also need to recognize which technique applies to a given problem.

Dynamic programming arrives in force at Gold: knapsack, bitmask DP, range DP, and digit DP, alongside shortest path algorithms (Dijkstra, Bellman-Ford, Floyd-Warshall), segment trees, union-find, topological sort, and minimum spanning trees.

The Platinum syllabus reads like a graduate algorithms course: advanced segment trees with lazy propagation, centroid decomposition, heavy-light decomposition, convex hull tricks, matrix exponentiation, and DP optimizations.

USACO difficulty scales sharply between divisions: Bronze is approachable for a first-year programmer, while Gold matches a college algorithms course and Platinum reaches competitive programming’s highest pre-college tier.

USACO Bronze can also be a relatively low-commitment way to explore competitive programming. However, the time investment changes significantly if a student decides to seriously pursue Gold or Platinum. At that point, USACO can become one of the student’s primary extracurricular activities rather than a competition they prepare for occasionally.

USACO’s main contest period falls during the winter and can overlap with midterms, finals, and other major academic deadlines. Students considering an intensive Gold or Platinum preparation schedule should factor that overlap into their overall high school workload.

7. Which Competition Fits Your Goals?

Choose ACSL if:

  • You’re in middle school or early high school and are still building your programming foundations.
  • You enjoy working on a team and want to compete alongside classmates.
  • You’re interested in a broad range of computer science topics, including how computers work, digital logic, and formal languages, rather than focusing primarily on algorithms.
  • You’re looking for a competition that can fit alongside other academic and extracurricular commitments.
  • Your school has an advisor who can register a team. Registration costs $175 per team per division.

Choose USACO if:

  • You already know how to code and want to develop stronger algorithmic problem-solving skills.
  • You prefer individual competition and self-paced progression.
  • You want to build deeper experience in competitive programming and algorithmic thinking.
  • You’re comfortable dedicating several hours to intensive problem-solving during contests.
  • You want a free competition with no team-registration requirement. You can simply create a free account and participate in the next contest.

Do Both If:

  • You want the team experience and broader CS theory covered by ACSL while also developing the algorithmic problem-solving skills emphasized by USACO.
  • The two competitions can also fit into the same school year: ACSL runs from October through May, while USACO’s main contests take place during the winter and early spring.

A possible progression is to start with ACSL Junior or Intermediate alongside USACO Bronze in Grades 8–9, move toward ACSL Senior and USACO Silver in Grade 10, and consider pursuing USACO Gold in Grade 11 if competitive programming becomes a significant academic interest.
