Writing Competition – Summer

This class is offered in the summer every year. Students from 13 to 19 years old wanting to learn how to shape their written English into effective and publishable creative pieces will find this particular Writing Competition course very exciting. The class will be shown a range of tools to learn the nuances of controlled, purposeful writing, including: figurative language, effective structuring and specific forms that they will apply to their own pieces.

Class Introduction

Students from 13 to 19 years old wanting to learn how to shape their written English into effective and publishable creative pieces will find this particular Writing Competition class very exciting. 

The class will guide students through a range of tools to learn the nuances of controlled, purposeful writing, including figurative language, effective structuring, and specific forms they will apply to their own pieces. 

Students will work directly with literary and media texts as they plan and write their own. This class will help students write to purpose and for an audience as they produce pieces for the following competitions: Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and the New York Times Writing Competition Series – Summer Reading and Student Review. The students will produce three fully-polished pieces built around the requirements of the competitions.

We now have class options for the New York Times Writing Competition Series – Summer Reading and Student Review and the Scholastic Art and Writing Award – Poetry, Flash Fiction, Short Story, Humor, and Personal Essay & Memoir categories

Competitions

Competition Deadlines: 

New York Times Summer Reading, June 7 to August 16, 2024. Students can submit weekly. 

New York Times Student Review runs from November 1 to December 6.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards run from December up to January. 

Feedback

Students and their parents will receive brief feedback after each class, regarding the student’s general participation in class. Students will also receive feedback on graded assignments via email. Individual writing assignments will receive continual and extensive on-text feedback from teacher as well as peer feedback. 

Schedule

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Preparation Class: 

  • Poetry and Flash Fiction: 8 group classes, 2 hours each, 16 hours in total
  • Flash Fiction and Short Story: 5 group classes, 2 hours each, 10 hours in total; 4 one-to-one classes, 1 hour each, 4 hours in total
  • Humor and Personal Essay & Memoir: 8 group classes, 2 hours each, 16 hours in total

New York Times Competition Series: 8 group classes, 2 hours each, 16 hours in total
