A Complete Guide to the International Economics Olympiad (IEO)

If you are passionate about Economics, Finance, or Business, the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) is one of the most valuable international academic competitions to consider during high school.
Article Summary

The International Economics Olympiad (IEO) is a prestigious international academic competition designed for high school students. Unlike competitions that focus solely on theoretical knowledge, the IEO evaluates students’ ability to analyze economic problems, apply concepts to real-world situations, solve complex problems, and collaborate with others through both individual assessments and practical business case challenges.

The IEO goes beyond testing students’ understanding of economic theory. Participants are expected to apply economic reasoning to real-world issues, evaluate business and financial decisions, and develop solutions to practical scenarios. As a result, the competition offers students an opportunity to strengthen analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

In this guide, Aralia will walk you through everything you need to know about the International Economics Olympiad (IEO), from eligibility requirements and competition structure to strategies for preparing effectively.

1. What Is the International Economics Olympiad (IEO)?

International Economics Olympiad (IEO) is an annual international academic competition for high school students from around the world, focusing on three core areas: Economics, Finance, and Business.

The competition aims to encourage students to explore fundamental economic principles, understand how businesses operate, and develop the ability to apply their knowledge to real-world problems rather than simply memorize theoretical concepts.

One of the IEO’s distinguishing features is the support of Eric Maskin, the 2007 Nobel Prize laureate in Economics. The involvement of internationally recognized economists and academics has helped the competition develop academically rigorous assessments while maintaining a strong connection to real-world economic issues.

After nearly a decade of growth, the IEO has become one of the largest international academic competitions for high school students interested in economics. More than 74 countries and territories participate, with hundreds of thousands of students taking part in national qualifying rounds each year. More than 50 countries have also established national selection systems to identify and send teams to the international final.

2. Who Can Participate in the International Economics Olympiad?

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to participate in the 2026 International Economics Olympiad (IEO), students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a high school student under the age of 20 as of the final month before the competition in July.
  • Reside in a country or territory that holds an official IEO national qualifying round.

Who Is the Competition For?

  • Students interested in Economics and Finance: This is one of the most natural groups for the competition. If you regularly follow topics such as inflation, interest rates, stock markets, or entrepreneurship, the IEO can provide an opportunity to organize that knowledge and learn how to analyze these issues through an economic lens.
  • Students who enjoy problem-solving: Unlike competitions that primarily test memorization, the IEO requires students to analyze data, evaluate different approaches, and make decisions based on sound reasoning. Students who enjoy working through real-world scenarios or participating in activities such as business simulations, economics clubs, or investment simulations may find the IEO particularly well suited to their interests and strengths.
3. International Economics Olympiad Competition Structure and Format

USA Economics and Business Olympiad (USAEBO) – National Qualifying Round

Eligibility: Students of any citizenship may participate in the USAEBO. However, students must meet additional requirements to be eligible for Team USA. To represent the United States at the IEO, a student must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or a full-time middle or high school student studying in the United States.

Students must also be 20 years old or younger on the first day of the International Economics Olympiad in the competition year.

Competition Structure:

  • Round 1 (March 13, 2027): tests students’ understanding of economics through 40 multiple-choice questions
  • Round 2 (March 27, 2027): students complete open-response problems and must demonstrate how they arrive at their conclusions.

Registration Deadline: February 27, 2027 at 11:59PM Eastern Time.

International Economics Olympiad World Finals

At the IEO World Finals, national teams compete across three main components:

  • Financial Literacy: This is an individual assessment consisting of approximately 25 multiple-choice questions focused on personal finance. Rather than requiring students to memorize complex financial formulas, this section emphasizes their ability to make sound financial decisions in realistic, everyday situations.
  • Economics: This is an individual assessment combining multiple-choice and open-response questions. Students are expected to apply their knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, data analysis, and economic policy. Many questions require students to explain economic phenomena or analyze the effects of a particular policy, rather than simply identify the correct answer.
  • Business Case: The Business Case is a team-based component and one of the most distinctive features of the IEO.
Teams are given a real-world business scenario and a set amount of time to research the problem, develop a strategy, and formulate a solution. They then present their recommendations to a panel of judges.

What Makes the International Economics Olympiad Unique?

Among the many academic competitions in economics available to high school students, the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) stands out for its comprehensive approach to assessing students’ abilities rather than focusing solely on performance in a single exam.

Integrating Multiple Fields into One Competition

Rather than focusing exclusively on economics, the IEO brings together three closely connected fields: economics, business, and finance. This integrated approach helps students understand how economic concepts are applied to business operations and real-world financial decisions.

Assessing Both Knowledge and Skills

The IEO evaluates not only what students know, but also how effectively they can apply that knowledge to solve problems. In addition to individual assessments, the competition requires students to present ideas, persuade others, and collaborate as a team during the Business Case.

Connecting Economics to Real-World Issues

IEO questions often draw inspiration from current economic issues and developments, ranging from inflation and international trade to business strategy and corporate growth. This encourages students to follow current events, read economic reports, and develop the habit of analyzing real-world developments through an academic lens.

It is this combination of subject knowledge, analytical thinking, and real-world application that makes the International Economics Olympiad a distinctive international competition for students interested in economics, finance, and business.

6. Awards

At the International Economics Olympiad World Finals, students can compete for several prestigious awards recognizing both individual and team performance.

Individual awards include:

  • Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals for individual achievement
Special Awards recognizing outstanding performance in specific areas
  • Gold, Silver, and Bronze Cups recognizing team achievement

Beyond the official awards, however, one of the most valuable aspects of participating in the IEO is the international academic experience. Students have the opportunity to meet peers from around the world, collaborate in a multicultural environment, and gain new perspectives on economics, finance, and business.

For students interested in pursuing these fields in the future, the experience can also help them develop cross-cultural communication, teamwork, and a broader understanding of how economic issues are viewed in different parts of the world.

7. How to Prepare Effectively for the International Economics Olympiad

One of the features that makes the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) distinctive is that it does not simply test students’ ability to memorize concepts. Students are also expected to demonstrate analytical thinking, the ability to apply economic knowledge, and problem-solving skills in real-world situations.

As a result, preparing for the IEO requires more than memorizing theory. Students should follow a structured preparation strategy that builds both their subject knowledge and their ability to apply that knowledge under competition conditions.

Below is a preparation roadmap that can help students approach the competition more effectively.

Preparing for the National Qualifying Round

Build a Strong Foundation Based on the Syllabus

Before beginning intensive practice, students should carefully review the official syllabus to understand the scope of knowledge they are expected to master: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics, and Personal Finance.

Students do not necessarily need to study these topics at a university level. Instead, they should focus on understanding the underlying concepts and learning how to apply them to real-world situations.

Follow Economic News Regularly

A common mistake students make is relying solely on textbooks. In practice, many IEO questions connect economic concepts to current events and real-world developments, including inflation, trade policy, interest rates, artificial intelligence, and the energy transition.

Students should develop a habit of following economic news from reputable sources such as The Economist, Financial Times, Bloomberg, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as reliable local economic news outlets.

Following current events helps students understand how economic theories and models can be used to explain real-world developments—an important skill for the IEO.

Practice Under Competition Conditions

Once students have established a strong knowledge base, they should begin completing practice tests under conditions that closely resemble the actual competition. After completing each practice test, students should go beyond simply checking the correct answers. Reviewing why an answer was incorrect and what concept or reasoning led to the mistake can be much more valuable for long-term improvement

Preparing for the IEO World Finals

Students who successfully advance through the national selection process will need to prepare for the more challenging components of the IEO World Finals, particularly the Business Case.

The Business Case can be one of the most challenging parts of the competition because there is not necessarily one predetermined “correct” answer. Judges evaluate how effectively a team analyzes the problem, develops a solution, supports its recommendations, and communicates its reasoning.

Learn Common Business Frameworks

A strong Business Case presentation often benefits from using established business and strategy frameworks. Students should become familiar with frameworks commonly used in consulting and business analysis, including:

  • SWOT Analysis: Helps students evaluate a company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It can be particularly useful for understanding a company’s competitive position.
  • Porter’s Five Forces: Developed by Michael Porter, this framework evaluates competitive forces within an industry, including existing competitors, new entrants, suppliers, customers, and substitute products or services. It is commonly used for strategic business analysis.
  • Marketing Mix (4Ps): Covers product, price, place, and promotion and can help students develop a marketing strategy for a company or product.
  • Business Model Canvas: Provides a structured way to examine a company’s overall business model, including its target customers, value proposition, distribution channels, revenue streams, cost structure, key resources, and partners.
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis: Helps compare the potential costs and benefits of different options and determine which approach may provide the greatest overall value.

Develop Teamwork Skills

The Business Case is a team-based competition, so strong performance depends not only on individual knowledge but also on how effectively team members work together.

A strong team does not necessarily consist of the five students with the strongest academic records. Instead, successful teams are able to divide responsibilities effectively, listen to different perspectives, challenge ideas using evidence, manage discussion time, and reach decisions together.

Students can develop these skills by practicing Business Cases in teams and rotating different roles during preparation. These collaboration and communication skills can also be valuable well beyond the competition, particularly in university and future professional settings.
