This course will focus on three genres: poetry, fiction, and personal narrative. In each 90-minute session, students will complete creative writing exercises, read, short anchor texts, and write their own original work.
In this course, students will be able to develop their analytical writing skills. From “unpacking” an author’s word choice to organizing a literary paragraph, students will bolster their ability to craft a cohesive argument and defend it with rich textual evidence.
In this course, we will work to hone our skills as close readers and critical writers. Through in-depth discussion and analysis of short stories and poetry, we will learn how to advance complex arguments that reflect an awareness of important themes and ambiguities in a literary work.

Students will learn how to write college application essays. During the first two group sessions, students will be shown examples of strong and weak essays, in addition to given guidance on how to write the Common Application Essay, the “Why School” Essay, and the UC Application Essay. Following the two group sessions, students will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the teacher.
